Directional Bilateral Asymmetry in Fish Otolith: A Potential Tool to Evaluate Stock Boundaries?

نویسندگان

چکیده

The otolith, found in both inner ears of bony fish, has mainly been used to estimate fish age. Another application that developing significantly recent years, however, is the use otolith shape as a tool for stock identification. Often, studies have directly asymmetry between right and left otoliths. We tested magnitude directional sagittal otoliths (left vs. right) 2991 individuals according their catch locations, we selected species evaluate whether may itself be boundaries. Disentangling fluctuating asymmetry from otolith shape

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), defined as random deviations from ideal, perfect symmetry, has been hypothesized to be negatively associated with fitness and positively associated with stress. Fish otoliths deserve special attention in regard to this topic because their FA is relatively easy to measure, unlike the fitness of wild fish themselves. In addition, otoliths are convenient for estimating ...

Fish Otolith as a Model for in Vitro Mineralization Studies

Otoliths are biominerals that grow in the endolymphatic fluid of the balance organs of vertebrates, and are composed of calcium carbonates with low amounts of organic matter [1]. In fish they are composed mainly of aragonite, and participate also in the transduction mechanism of hearing [2]. The microstructure of otoliths give information about their own process of growth, as it is possible to ...

Investigating the Asymmetry in Volatility for the Iranian Stock Market

This paper investigates the asymmetry in volatility of returns for the Iranian stock market using the daily closing values of the Tehran exchange price index (TEPIX) covering the period from March 25, 2001 to July 25, 2012, with a total of 2743 observations. To this end, two sets of tests have been employed: the first set is based on the residuals derived from a symmetric GARCH (1,1) model. The...

Shedding Light on Fish Otolith Biomineralization Using a Bioenergetic Approach

Otoliths are biocalcified bodies connected to the sensory system in the inner ears of fish. Their layered, biorhythm-following formation provides individual records of the age, the individual history and the natural environment of extinct and living fish species. Such data are critical for ecosystem and fisheries monitoring. They however often lack validation and the poor understanding of biomi...
